Stumps and surface roots ground below grade so the yard is yours again.
A stump left in the yard does not go away on its own. A hardwood stump can take years to rot, and during that time it is a tripping hazard, a mower hazard, and a spot where the lawn will not grow. Rotting stumps also attract wood-boring insects and ants, and some species keep sending up shoots from the roots.
Digging a stump out by hand or with a loader tears up the yard and leaves a crater. Grinding does less damage. A grinder cuts the wood away in layers, from the top down, and leaves loose chips in the hole. The surrounding lawn, beds, and hardscape stay where they are.
Depth matters for what you plan to do next. Six inches is plenty to reseed a lawn. If you want to plant a new tree or shrub on the same spot, tell us and we will go deeper and clear more of the root flare.
Stumps rarely sit in open lawn. We grind next to fences, patios, retaining walls, and foundations. Tell us about gate width and narrow side yards before the visit so we plan the equipment. Where a stump is tight against a structure, we grind away from the structure and leave the last few inches of wood rather than risk the wall. We tell you before we do that.
Stump size is the first factor. A stump is measured across the top, and the roots add to the volume of wood to be ground. Species and age matter too: dry hardwood is slower to cut than a freshly felled softwood. Access, the number of stumps, and any buried rock or old fencing in the root zone also change the time on site. We quote after we see the stumps.
If a tree is coming down anyway, grinding the stump on the same visit saves a second trip. We usually discount stump work done with a removal. See tree removal in Rome or land clearing if you have a whole lot of stumps to deal with.
A stump from a tree that came down five or ten years ago is a normal job. Old stumps are often softer in the center and grind faster, but the roots can stay hard. If the stump is already gone from view under grass or leaves, point out where it was and we will find it.
Tell us what is going on and we will get back to you with a clear, no-obligation quote.
